Make your horse relaxed
My pony/horse is very temperamental. What is the best feeding regimen for making him relaxed and manageable?
The temperament of a horse depends on his character. You can’t change his character, but animals who are relatively nervous and stressed can be fed rations with energy feed that’s not as easily digestible combined with more fat. This could make him less temperamental.
Research in the USA has shown that the temperament of horses depends on the rations. Some horses that were fed rations with easily digestible carbohydrates became far less relaxed and more difficult to manage than horses that were fed rations with lots of fat. The quick energy attained from oats can increase certain hormone levels making the horse tenser. A major factor in the ration fed to a tense horse is sufficient roughage. Lucerne-mix can replace a part of the concentrate. Lucerne-mix contains more vitamins and minerals than hay or grass silage. This makes it an excellent replacement for a part of the concentrate.
With light work it is recommended to add a small amount of Balance textured muesli. If he still needs more energy for a heavier workload, you can add Energy Special grains mix without oats to keep your horse more relaxed. Another alternative is using vegetable oil (for example, sunflower oil) as a source of energy. In general, a fat-rich ration ensures less temperament. Providing enough exercise is also a good means of getting rid of excess energy.
